A musical theatre game show

Each edition has a theme and turns performance into a game: competitions, impressions and audience votes. Gender-bent casting lets the shows question the gender norms written into the songs. Every show is performed live, then released on video.

I co-created Voice Crack with Jasmine Amaral at USC, where it still runs as a collegiate show. In New York I direct and co-produce it with Carolina Hurtado Castro, and in April 2027 we launch its professional edition. I run it as a business too, from marketing campaigns to ticket forecasts and venue deals.

Coming out, to a soundtrack that never imagined me

A comedic retelling of my coming out, told through the music I grew up with: Latin music, intensely passionate and very heterosexual. The songs that taught me how love was supposed to sound become the score for a story they were never written for.

I'm writing it and will perform it myself, bringing together the two sides of my practice: making shows, and being on stage in them.

House of Harmony

Nov 22, 2024
TCC Ballroom, USC

Existence as a form of resistance

A three-act live show made by a team of Black, Latine and queer creatives. Each act opened with an original short film and moved into fashion, dance and live music. The name comes from the houses of Black and Latine queer ballroom culture: chosen families where identity could be expressed in full.

Sean Guzmán and I conceived and directed it over six months. I shaped the narrative arc, oversaw choreography, music, staging and lighting, and co-choreographed the dance pieces with Elizabeth Smiley. After the show, an artist reception let the designers sell their work and the audience meet the team.

¡Voz Latina! USC Sings 2024

Feb 10, 2024
Tommy's Place, USC

A concert about how the Caribbean lives in music

I conceived ¡Voz Latina! after seeing USC Sings: Jazz Night and noticing there was no comparable show for Latin music. I pitched it to the Performing Arts Committee, which made it the 2024 edition of USC Sings.

Ten acts traced salsa, merengue and bachata through songs by Celia Cruz, Juan Luis Guerra, Grupo Niche, Elvis Crespo and El Gran Combo, backed by a six-piece live band. Between songs, a documentary directed by Dulce Mejía Morales and filmed during rehearsals introduced the performers and their connection to the music.

Role
Creator, creative director, choreographer · artistic director and co-producer of the documentary · cast member
Program
10 live music and dance acts · 6-piece band · 10-min documentary
